Carpet Cleaning Tips

Different Carpet Cleaning Methods

The two main forms of carpet cleaning are Hot Water Extraction and Very Low Moisture.

Hot Water Extraction (HWE)

HWE has grown to be the most common method of carpet cleaning. It is also identified as Steam Cleaning.

The most common method of HWE is to prespray the carpet with a cleaning solution then agitate the solution into the carpet. If the carpet is not very dirty often the agitation step is skipped. The cleaning solution is often permitted to dwell (5 to 20 minutes) on the carpet. Then the carpet is rinsed with hot water or using water along with a neutralizing or encapsulating chemical. Carpet Pre spray is typically a powerful cleaner. It is mixed into a sprayer and then sprayed lightly in the cleaner areas and heavier on traffic lanes and dirty areas of the carpet.

The main variables in carpet cleaning are cleaning solution, agitation, dwell time, and heat. The classic line is if one of your factors is limited you need to increase the quantity or quality of a different one of the other cleaning elements. For instance if you do not have a lot of heat in your rinse water you can make up for that by using more agitation.

Spot Cleaning of Carpets.

Many daily household items can cause a difficult stain when spilled on your carpet. Hot coffee Softdrinks, cosemetics, mustard, and any spilled protein will often develop into a spot.

Ink, fresh paint, beauty products, and grease are a different type of stain which generally need a different spotter to remove.

Mustard and red koolaid stains can be difficult to get out. If the dye type stain is hard set into an unprotected carpet you will probably not be able to get itout.

How Can Wickbacks be Fixed?

Wick backs are a problem with most carpets and rugs, even more so with carpets that are not mounted over a pad. Primarily with steam cleaning you can clean a carpet and the spot will appear be gone. As the carpet dries the stain may reappear. This is caused by the moisture in the carpet is wicking up the carpet fiber and bringing the stain back up the fiber and onto the top of the carpet. Bonnet Cleaning, Encapsulating, and OP methods rarely have wickback problems.

The Bonnet Style Cleaning of Carpets

Bonnet Cleaning generally refers to employing a 175rpm Floor machine with a cotton pad . The Cotton Bonnet is where Bonnet Cleaning gets it's name. There have been a couple of very large national chains of carpet cleaners that have based their system on Bonnet cleaning with a 175 rpm machine.

How the Cimex Carpet Machine Works

The Cimex is an unusual twist on the rotating head cleaner. It has three small heads which counter rotate to the direction of the main disk. It appears to be a regular floor machine however the agitation of the carpet is not the same. This unit is very popular for commercial cleaning.

Ocsillating Pad (OP) Carpet Machine

The Ocsillating Pad machines appear to be nearly the same as the 175 rpm floor buffer but has a entirely different action. The base of the unit vibrates and rapidly rotates in little small circles and rotates in a large circle also. OP machines do a very good job of scrubbing the individual fibers. It works very well on some carpets like berbers and comercial glued down carpet.

Pet Troubles with Rugs

Generally with small Pet Urine issues you can saturate the area with roughly the same amount of Urine neutralizer, let soak about thirty minutes and then extract. If a section of carpet has been severely heavily used by a family pet repeatedly the pad and sub floor can be contaminated. To solve this problem usually you will have to pull up the rug, replace the carpet pad, paint the sub floor with a special sealer. Often you may have to replace the carpet.

Encapsulated Carpet Cleaning There are cleaning solutions available that are referred to as Encapsulating. What these chemicals do is break the dirt's bond with the carpet and dry to a flake. This flake will separate from the carpet with normal vacuuming. These forumulas were engineered for the Very Low Moisture carpet cleaners but commonly function nicely utilizing Hwe also.

Why you need to Vacuum More Often.

Carpeting is an excellent air filtration system . Dust particles and dirt will normally be trapped in the fibers of carpet. Regular vacuuming will remove a lot of this dirt. A lot of this dust will filter through the carpet to the carpet backing and not come back up. Have you ever noticed that you do not find the dust bunnies floating around on a carpeted floor but you will get dust bunnies forming after only a day or two when you have hard surface floors.
